Week 12, November 26 - December 2, 2019

Near Borrego Springs, CA

Tuesday, November 26, 2019

Yesterday I went to Indio and picked up some 2X2s and a couple of ½ sheets of plywood. Today, the weather was amazingly brilliant, and I built a propane locker.  I made a frame from the 2X2s and put plywood on two sides.

I like that my 2 propane tanks are safely stowed and also free up some much needed garage floor space.  I chose not to put a door on the locker, that way there is plenty of air circulation and I can visually inspect the tanks while doing my walk around check.

On Facebook I made a contest for my friends to name my truck err van…..I will let the contest run for 3 days, by then I should have some pretty good options. The winner will receive a package of my tea towel hangy thingies.

My plan with the little AGM battery didn’t work as well as I hoped. A lesson learned, I need a bigger battery for a cooler.  I am going to have to rethink my food storage problem. Back to the drawing board.

Looks like the weather is going to turn on us, it’s supposed to get a bit cooler, windier and there’s a call for rain. Darn!

Today Lynne and I decided to go to Borrego Springs and do a little bit of exploring. We looked in a Thrift Store – I found the perfect carpenter’s square with markings that are readable without me having to squint or get super close.

We roamed around, and decided to have a meal at a local restaurant Carmelita’s. The tacos were amazing. Honestly I don’t think I have ever had tacos that tasted so mind blowing good! And the Caesar Salad was pretty good too!

On the way back Lynne took a scenic route, which meant technically we were 4X4ing in a smart car. Wow!

The rain and wind arrived. My truck was rocking like a dinghy on a rough sea.  Good thing I don’t get sea sick!

(American Thanksgiving)

I was able to officially give my rig an honourable name, thanks to my nephew and a friend. They both had creative names, which I combined. Proudly presenting “Mobius, the Nomadic Handyvan”  I will make sure both will get some great tea towel hangy thingies made by me!
"Mobuis, the Nomadic Handyvan"

Due to the nasty weather, I spent most of the day watching tv and making more plans for finishing the interior of Mobius, the Nomadic Handyvan.

My traveling companions and I decided to take a bit of a drive into Borrego Springs. It was good to get out of camp. While driving into town, noticed that there was snow on the tops of the surrounding mountains.

After a breakfast of tacos, of course, we started scouting around for a new campsite closer to Borrego Springs. Then I noticed a brilliant rainbow!

After returning to our camp, I made the decision that tomorrow I would head into Indio for a supply run and to do a night in a hotel room. Every week or two I get a hotel room do have a couple of really good showers, stable internet, tv and I find a nearby restaurant or order in some food. Essential self care!

I spent part of the afternoon, packing and stowing my gear.

Got up early and drove into Indio, it's a good drive, takes about an hour. First stop is Home Depot for building supplies. I roamed around a bit and then found a decent and cheap hotel. Timing is perfect as I have a counseling appointment. Mental health is always good to keep in touch with my therapist. I guess the biggest issue for me lately had been unsolicited advice by folks who aren't out here living in an RV full time. It was good to check in with my therapist who confirmed that what I was feeling and thinking is completely normal.   After that session, I went to a local restaurant for tacos of course. Back at the hotel I did a bit of writing and plotting my next few weeks.

Bought a new battery for my cooler/cold food storage. Hopefully it works better than the last one. Next was my laundry. My friend Lynne told me about Don Gordo's Launderland. It is great. Used two double loaders and two dryers and my clothes were clean, dried and folded within an hour.
Laundry then back to Walmart for a bit of grub.
The drive back to camp was good, except there was a traffic accident near the Red Earth Casino. The Interstate was down to one lane in each direction. The traffic coming out of the Casino was backed up. Other than that, I enjoyed driving.
Got to camp, setup my solar panels and my battery. Decided not to unload completely as Lynne and I are moving to a new spot on Monday.
I think I am getting the hang of boondocking. It's been great to camp with folks who are full time RVers.

Moving day. After my travel companion packed up, she went to Salton Sea City to dump her tanks and get some supplies. I started the day by charging my new battery. Then I also headed to Salton Sea City, for gas and water.
We're moving at a meandering pace which is quite calming.  We're not moving far but getting essentials is good.
