Week 20, January 21 – 27, 2020
This week, the week of the RTR – Rubber Tramp
Rendezvous, I have been camped with the Rainbow Nomads on Polomsa Road about 7
miles (11km) north of Quartzsite, Arizona.
I took in a few sessions at the RTR, but a majority of my time was
socializing with the members and now new friends. There were tonnes of delicious food, laughter
and love.
As an introvert - occasionally I need to remind myself to get out there!
I was quite sociable - and I didn't take many pictures this past week!
AS and I decided to attend a panel titled “Driving
North” our intention was to heckle the presenter as AS is from Alaska and I
have driven the Alaska Highway I don’t know how many times going back to the
70s, plus I lived on the Alaska Highway
for 11 years as a child. BUT, the presenter knew his stuff. Although he likes to travel the Stewart
Cassiar Highway more than the Alaska Highway. Fair enough – the Stewart Cassiar
is a beautiful drive. Maybe one day I will drive it again. The last time I
drove it was in 1995 when I took a solo motorbike trip from the Yukon all the
way to Cape Cod Massachusetts. 16,000 kms in 60 days. It was an amazing trip –
camping in a pup tent every night, and cooking over a Coleman Spider (a single
burner with two legs).

We had impromptu communal dinners – tacos, make your
own pizzas, wiennie roast and breakfast with D and J. This unplanned events
built our community. We held the unofficial Polomsa Road Queer Film Festival –
Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Kinky Boots, Paul and Rocky Horror Picture
Show.
Watching, "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
On Saturday I took Mobius up to the RTR and set her up
to show her off. I think about 40 or 50 people toured Mobius, the Nomadic
Handyvan. They all had great questions and comments. I was really touched.
I left the Rainbow Nomads early Sunday morning to do a
side trip – I drove up to Pahrump, NV. Decided to spoil myself with a hotel
room and a delicious shower. When I woke
up this morning I felt great!
I drove from Pahrump to Beatty, to Tonopah, stopping
at Area 51 Travel Centre, and continued to Warm Springs then down the ET
Highway to Rachel – staying the night at the Little A’Le’Inn. After I paid for
the RV park I found out that it’s the Red Flag week - Air Forces from around
the world have come to this area to show off their skills in mock dog fights
and other flying acrobatic silliness. (Anyone else flashing back to “Top Gun?)
Still, it’s warm, fairly quiet and I can relax. I
think tomorrow I will make my way down to Lake Havasu and join the Rainbow
Nomads for a couple of days. Soon it will be time to begin my 2 month trek back
home to the Yukon…(6310kms/3920miles)
