Week 7, October 22 - 28, 2019

Tuesday, October 22, 2019

I am still visiting with my friend Tealey and her family. Really enjoying the warm weather - most of the time it was dry which will really helped with the build. I was in a bit of a rush to get the insulation job done! And I did it! I still have to the corners to do, but  most of the insulation is done.
 Passenger side
Driver's side.

The biggest part of insulating the cube van is the cutting of each piece of styrofoam. At times it felt like a waste - but overall I didn't really have that much waste.

I spoke to a friend who has a small handyman job. The plan is to head to Sherbrooke on Thursday. The weather turned to rain - hmmm what to do to on a rainy day which also happens to be my last day with my Eastern Family?  I know - I will take over the kitchen and make some magic happen!

I made fresh Italian Flatbread, homemade Clam Chowder and fresh donuts from scratch! I was hopping like a mad for about 4 hours!

We sat around the dining room table and chatted like any other family - knowing I would be departing and everyone hopes I will return next fall.

I made my way to Sherbrooke - an hour and half drive.  After picking up a sandwich and a couple of drinks I cheerfully headed down the highway. I drove about 30 kms then realized I had forgotten to pick up some quite important! GAS!!!! I was on fumes when it  dawned on me that I had forgotten, I took a quick trip into a small farming village called Marieville. With the disaster averted I continued towards my friends' home. I admired the scenery, leaves were in colour and many were dropping, it felt magically.

It was good to visit with my friend and her husband. They had a small list of projects. We chose the most important job and decided that a couple of the smaller jobs were feasible.

My friend and I drove into Sherbrooke and found the perfect baseboard heaters, after a few missteps, a couple of conversations with various people we were able to get the bits and pieces we needed. We also went into a club de tissu - a fabric shop. We both chose the same fabric, but different ribbons. It will be interesting to see the two ribbon skirts when we're done sewing them.

Got my bearings of where I was, and settled in quite comfortably!  Their house overlooks Magog Lake, and is surrounded by young beautiful cedar trees - it's so peaceful and healing there.

Got up, I thought I was the first up, as I didn't hear anyone moving around, apparently they were up and busy enjoying the outdoors while I continued to snooze.

Grabbed a drink of tea, and got busy with the big job. Which was switching out 4 baseboard heaters.  Overall the job was easy - the biggest thing to worry about is connecting the electrical properly. That is essential.

One of the original baseboards all wired up.  Dusty, a bit buggy and these older models aren't as efficient as the newer models.

Remember green is ground, black to black or positive to positive and white or red to white or neutral to neutral.  Make sure all connections are nice and snug. I used a two piece marette which consists of a inner brass piece that both wires are fed into and screwed down and then a maretter cover.
These marettes are designed for high temperature and/or high vibration uses.

After replacing 4 baseboard heaters and making sure they all worked properly I got busy in the kitchen. I make my favourite stew and bannock meal. I have been making this stew long enough know I that I am no longer looking at the recipe.  So far, no complaints about my cooking.

It's great when my friends say, "there's the kitchen have at 'er."

Sunday October 27, 2019

It was a rather lazy relaxing day.  I assisting in fixing a couple of door jambs.

A little hack for anyone who has to move the strike plate a 1/4" so the door closes properly - remove the screws, tap wooden golf tees into the original screw holes and cut off the excess, then realign your strike plate to the new spot and carefully replace the screws. (Also works for screw holes that are striped).

I got up early, packed up my gear and drove west 343 kilometers to Ottawa to visit a couple of great friends. The first thing we did is hit up a couple of grocery stores and we got back to their place I immediately started making my stew. It was delicious and my friends have already asked for the recipe!

My schedule while here is kind of up in the air. I am hoping to do some sewing and maybe even teach someone how to use their sewing machine!

Another week another adventure.  Fifteen more days and I head south to the deserts of Arizona.
